The A8 is powered by a 4172CC motor with 8 cylinders in a Vee and produces 355bhp. The motor uses variable valve- timing and five valves per cylinder head. The motor however isn't as refined as the S350L at idle. It has a strong mid- range and pulls strongly. It is a luxury car with a sports car-like performance. The air suspension system swallows sharp bumps easily. Different modes can be selected depending on the road condition; the ?comfort mode' improves the ride whereas the ?lift' mode raises the car by 145mm which gives it a good ground clearance. when driven in ?S' mode the gearbox collects data from the ESP sensor, detects that the car is inn a corner and prevents an up-shift from taking place until instructed. Its Quattro four-wheel-drive system senses a difference in torque output to the wheels and transfers torque to the wheel which still has a good reserve of grip. It rolls very little around corners and the front end sticks to almost any line you choose.

The A8 uses bold, confident lines, a high waist and huge wheel arches to make it look planted. The exterior is less subtle but is still discreet. The headlight and the tai-light cluster are mounted high up and the square-jawed nose has a masculine look about it. The rear of the car looks modern with the twin exhaust and tiny tail-lamps. The car is built mostly out of aluminium and the four-wheel-drive system is standard. This system is marginally heavier than a rear- wheel-drive only unit however benefits in wet driving conditions or when driving hard. The car has air suspension system and the suspension arms are all-aluminium. The front suspension uses a double-wish-bone setup and the rear has a trapezoidal link design. The rack-and-pinion steering system uses variable ratios and weighs up nicely at higher speeds.

Verdict
The car looks like it was sculpted from a single block of metal. The long-wheelbase version looks stunning. Its high- tech aluminium chassis, four-wheel-drive system, brilliant 40-valve V8 and adaptive air suspension make it competitive in every area. Levels of refinement and comfort are up to scratch, it comes loaded with features, and performs and drives and handles better than any car its size should.
