A4 Review

The new A4 has the grunt and the straightline performance to get you grinning even when you are in sombre mood. It's a brilliantly executed luxury car which rides brilliantly and quality is at its best.

Performance

The new Audi A4 has the 3.2-litre FSI petrol motor which produces 265bhp. The motor is reasonably smooth while not as refined as the BMW or a Mercedes. The power delivery of this 6 cylinder in vee is explosive which makes short bursts of acceleration addictive and fun to drive. The gearshift paddles behind the steering wheel puts gear-shifting right at your finger tips and the gearbox can be used in manual mode as well. The performance is lightning quick and the acceleration is very strong despite having tall gearing. Switch on the ?dynamic' button under the gearbox and the car changes the way it applies its electronic throttle. The electronic steering gets heavier and weighs up as you approach triple digit speeds and steering ratio is tightened too. Despite the tyres, the A4 rides reasonably well in urban conditions.

Fuel Economy

The direct injection motor of the A4 has a high compression ratio which is high even for a more tolerant direct injection motor which means the fuel is not being burned effectively. It delivers 5.0kpl in the city and 7.3kpl on the highway.

Build and Styling

The new A4 has a more grown-up look. Its distinctive LED headlights have been taken from its Audi R8 sports car which looks like a string of pearls. apart from the head and tail-lights there is nothing radical about the A4's styling as most of the design cues are of Audi's tried and tested standards. The A4 is built on the Audi's new Modular Longitudinal Platform (MLP) and a lot of aluminium is used in the front suspension. The rear suspension allows for sporty and short springs and the dampers are tall for luxury car-like travel and all the dampers are adjustable for either a pliant ride or harder dynamic setting. The latest Quattro or four-wheel-drive system has rear biased split for more neutral handling and less understeer, however this makes the A4 150kg heavier than the BMW 325i. The cabin of the A4 gives you an impression that you are seated in an expensive, well designed cockpit. As it has the electronic handbrake it opens up some space for oddment enclosures. This version of the A4 comes with a keyless go and Bang&Olufsen sound system that has 10 channels, 14 speakers and a sub-woofer. It offers a bigger cabin to its occupants as the A4 has the longest wheelbase in the class and most width too. The front seats are large and very comfortable. The rear bench is fairly upright and thigh support is not exceptional, however there is lot of legroom. The car is not ideal for the fifth passenger as access across the transmission tunnel is severely restricted.

Verdict

A4 is a car that you will want more than need. The headlights make the car stand out, it looks larger than its rivals and space and comfort are better too. Comfort in the rear is marginally better and the interior quality may be only passable by Audi standards. This is not the most practical petrol however its just so much fun that you tend to forget its shortcomings.
